How and why to buy a premium domain name

I must say after buying and selling premium domain names for several years things have changed. Remember the basics. Dot com's rule the Web. Google accounts for 80% of Global internet searches, and how many page one results do you see on Google that are.org or.net? Some is the answer. But very few and they do not carry the same prestige a Dot Com does, and always will. Unless you can find a generic term or single word in the inferior extensions I would not suggest investing too much as it may prove to be a mistake.

Mistake two is buying a Domain name that sounds catchy but has little to no meaning. Unless you can back an invented or meaningless word for branding with hundreds of thousands of dollars to gain Brand awareness this would prove to be the second folly. Now if you find one priced in your budget that has expired and was a website for several years with many backlinks this would be not be an error. Those Domain names might get traffic and can be useful. I recommend seeking out those first and finding some analytics on them and going from there.

Mistake three is buying a Domain name not closely relative to exactly you are doing on the Website. If you are selling Frisbee's, Frisbee needs to be in the name. You can't afford the domain name Frisbee so of coarse you will be tempted to add a word before or after it. Not yet. First off let's say you sell Frisbees. Put in Google Adwords free Keyword tool Frisbees. They will show you the most common phrases typed in the search engine. That's where you might see stats that will change your game plan. You may see 1 million folks type in Frisbee shirts. Then you see Frisbee only gets 350,000 monthly searches. Well are you now still going to sell Frisbees or Frisbee shirts? If you choose Frisbee shirts you will have a larger market. This is an invented example however can be sobering after you buy a domain and find low typed in search results for your keywords. So in this case you will choose Frisbeeshirts.com. That is relevant to your product so now you own a generic/premium domain name. Furthermore this Domain name and Website will sit on page one of Google for free as long as you keep it up.

The nice thing is with a name like this you not only will not need to advertise but will have people wanting to advertise on your site, all because of the status of owning a "generic" domain name. Too bad Frisbee t-shirts is not a big industry because I just checked and it is available. I would think with a little creativity one of my readers could do something with it.

Final mistake I will cover in this piece is buying a domain name because it "Feels good" Sort of like Liberals who often trade in logic and reason for "feelings" If it can't be easily memorized do not bother with the domain name.

The more one remembers and the shorter the name, the better. Also research the industry inside and out. Make sure if you are planning on selling Dog food you are aware of shipping costs for example.

This is a strong buyers market. Be picky and respect the sellers price range. Many Domainers or Premium domain name sellers are at break even or less in many cases selling Domain names. If you can not afford their price maybe you can gain knowledge from a conversation with them regarding alternative names for you to consider purchasing from him or elsewhere.

Soon 1/3 of the worlds population is estimated to be on the Web, so go get those names and open up for business.

The term "Premium Domain Name" is used to describe a Domain name of higher value and rarity due to seasoning, length of name, receptiveness of domain, specificity, ease of memorizing, scope of industry, type in stats and several other factors.  Your web address is your brand, your brand Domain  Name choice very well could  be the tipping point for any business and determine if its going to to succeed, or be thrown overboard to the sharks.
